Microplastics + Human body

Microplastics can disrupt the sensorimotor links and neural networks vital for learning and autopoiesis, the essence of life. Since the operational closure of organisms is key to survival, environmental disturbances like microplastic pollution could have serious impacts. Further research is crucial to fully grasp these consequences on human health and the environment.

Consumption

People ingest the equivalent of a credit card in plastic every week, mainly from drinking water.

Operational Closure

Microplastics can disrupt the brain's connections and hinder learning and autopoiesis, which is essential for life.

Disruption

To survive, organisms need operational closure. Environmental disruptions can harm this process.

Narrative: Medical Cases

Also known as clinical cases or patient cases, refer to real-life scenarios or examples that describe the medical conditions, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes of individual patients. These cases are typically used in medical education, research, and clinical practice to enhance understanding, problem-solving skills, and decision-making abilities in healthcare.

Public awareness

Studying how microplastics affect medical conditions like skin irritations, vision problems, sinus infections, and hearing loss can help us grasp the harm they can cause to our health.

Stressing urgency

Microplastic pollution causes medical issues and requires effective action.

Evoking empathy and driving action

Showcasing relatable health problems caused by microplastic pollution can motivate individuals to take action and address the issue.

Promoting collaboration

Collaboration among scientists, healthcare professionals, environmentalists, policymakers, and society is essential to address the medical impact of microplastics and raise contamination awareness.

A 35-year-old man experienced a burning sensation on his hand: a rare breakout of the dermis

Plastiderma Eruption is a skin condition caused by microplastics. It looks like acne or herpes and causes indigo, inflamed bumps. It's important to see a dermatologist for proper treatment and to prevent recurrence by addressing microplastic pollution.

Plastoptic Neuropathy Revealed: Investigating Microplastic-Induced Visual Impairment and Nerve Dysfunction

Plastoptic Neuropathy is a debilitating medical condition characterized by the loss of sight caused by the accumulation of microplastic particles on the surface and within the delicate structures of the eyes. These microplastics disrupt normal ocular function, leading to progressive vision impairment and potentially irreversible damage to the visual system.

Microplastic Melanosis: Investigating Abnormal Skin Pigmentation resembling Melanoma on 16 years old daughter and 58 years old father.

Microplastic Melanosis is an alarming skin pigmentation disorder caused by the accumulation of microplastic particles within the skin. Similar to melanoma, this condition leads to the abnormal production and distribution of pigments, resulting in darkened patches or lesions on the skin's surface. Microplastic Melanosis can pose challenges in accurate diagnosis, as it mimics the appearance of melanoma.

Case Study: Plastidermatitis Mimicking Psoriatic Plaques - A Diagnostic Challenge

Plastidermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by severe rash triggered by prolonged exposure to plastic. Chronic exposure to microplastics generates an intense inflammatory response in susceptible individuals. As a result, the skin becomes inflamed, and developing itchy, scaly patches resembling psoriatic plaques. Diagnosis is difficult, as patients are usually misdiagnosed with autoimmune conditions, with little to no response to treatment. Once diagnosed, patients must avoid further exposure to plastic, which is nearly impossible in today's plastic pollution crisis, especially in industrialized areas.

Unveiling Microplastic-induced Cataracts: A Case of Vision Impairment due to Microplastic Accumulation

Progressive eye condition akin to cataracts, induced by the accumulation of microplastic particles within the lens of the eye. These tiny plastic fragments disrupt the natural transparency and clarity of the lens, resulting in vision impairment and a gradual decline in visual acuity. Microplastic induced-cataracts are more frequent in younger patients, 30 - 40 years old, especially in coastal villages and cities.

Silent Threat: Unraveling Plastacoustic Neuropathy and Microplastic-Induced Hearing Loss

Plastacoustic Neuropathy is a debilitating medical condition characterized by the progressive loss of hearing resulting from the presence of microplastic particles in the auditory system. These tiny plastic fragments interfere with the delicate structures of the inner ear, including the cochlea and auditory nerve, leading to diminished auditory function and sensorineural hearing loss. Plastacoustic Neuropathy can manifest as difficulty understanding speech, tinnitus, and a decreased ability to perceive sounds of varying frequencies.

Microplastic Nasitis Unmasked in a 22-Year-Old FEMale: Exploring Nasal Inflammation and Irritation Caused by Microplastic Particles

Microplastic Nasitis is a nasal medical condition characterized by the presence of blueish sores, primarily around the nose and mouth, resembling impetigo. These sores rapidly rupture, leading to oozing and the formation of a distinct indigo-colored crust. The microplastics present on the skin's surface can facilitate the spread of these sores to other areas of the body through contact with touch, clothing, and towels. Itching and soreness accompanying Microplastic Nasitis are generally mild.
